UK SRS effective date: your first period and report

There are three different dates hiding inside the phrase “UK SRS effective date”.

The rules apply from a period start, come into force on a fixed day, and produce a report months after a year end.

The tool below works out all three for your year end, from the FCA’s final rules and the four-month reporting deadline.

Your dates

Pick your year end and category

The tool assumes a twelve-month year ending on the last day of a month, which covers most listed companies.

Initial application is the start of the first annual period beginning on or after 1 January 2027 and before 1 January 2028.

Every later date is counted from there, not from the calendar.

That is why a March year-end company has its first UK SRS period start on 1 April 2027 and its first report in mid-2028.

If your securities are not in a category the rules reach, the tool says so; the scope page explains why.

A December year end

The calendar-year company, date by date

For a December year end the dates line up with the calendar, which is why most summaries use it.

The first report covers 2027 and must be public by the end of April 2028.

The second period, 2028, is the first without the Scope 3 relief.

The third period, 2029, is the first in which every part of UK SRS S1 is on comply or explain.

The publication date in the timeline is out of order on purpose: the 2027 report is published after the 2028 period has already begun.

A company whose period straddles 1 January 2027 is not caught part-way through it.

For that period it keeps the TCFD-aligned rule or chooses to adopt UK SRS early, and an early adopter keeps the reliefs.

A September year-end company’s first UK SRS report may therefore not appear until early 2029.

Voluntary use

Why the Standards carry no date

Appendix E of UK SRS S1 and Appendix C of UK SRS S2 leave the date to whoever requires the Standards.

For listed companies that is the FCA; for everyone else, nobody yet.

A voluntary reporter can start whenever it chooses, and the FRC says it can use the reliefs without a time limit.

Guidance still in draft

The FCA’s draft Technical Note 803.1 on explanations is open for comment until 28 October 2026, so the guidance may change before the first period starts.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask

What is the UK SRS effective date?

The Standards themselves have none: UK SRS S1 and S2 contain no effective date and are available for voluntary use now.

For listed companies in scope, the FCA’s rules apply to accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, and the FCA instrument comes into force on that date.

When is the first UK SRS report due?

In 2028 for most companies.

The disclosures sit in the annual financial report, which DTR 4.1.3R requires to be public within four months of the year end.

A company with a 31 December year end reports on its 2027 year by 30 April 2028; a March year-end company’s first period runs from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2028, with the report due by 31 July 2028.

What happens to a period that begins in 2026?

A company whose accounting period begins before 1 January 2027 may stay on the TCFD-aligned disclosure rule for that period or adopt the UK SRS rules early.

PS26/19 paragraph 3.19 lets an early adopter use the same transitional reliefs as everyone else.

When do the UK SRS reliefs end?

Under the FCA rules the Scope 3 relief covers only the first period, so it is no longer available for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2028 for a calendar-year company.

The climate-first relief from non-climate UK SRS S1 matters covers two periods, so it ends for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2029.

When a relief ends the matter moves to comply or explain; it does not become mandatory.

Are comparatives needed in the first UK SRS report?

No. UK SRS S1 paragraph E1 and UK SRS S2 paragraph C1 relieve an entity from disclosing comparative information in the first period it applies the Standards.

Is 1 January 2027 a filing deadline?

No. It is the earliest start date of a period the rules reach and the date the instrument comes into force.

Nothing is filed on that day.
